GENERAL INFORMATION
This portion of the site is designed to introduce new members of the lab to our working environment as well as to provide current members with an efficient and easy-to-use method of looking up specific information pertaining to the resources available within the laboratory.
If you are a new member of the Lesniak lab, welcome! We are excited to have you as a member of our team and look forward to working with you as we embark on the journey to cure brain cancer. By now, most of the paper-work pertaining to your position should be finalized; however, in the unlikely event that some outstanding issues remain, the following set of guidelines will help to smooth the process:
1. If you have not already done so, please contact Mrs. Mecca Johnson, the administrator for neurosurgery, in Arkes 2201, as soon as possible. She will be responsible for putting together your employment/volunteer offer. All issues pertaining to your benefits and work visa/immigration will be handled by Ms. Dawn Rose. During your time in the lab, she will also be responsible for all issues pertaining to your employment.
2. Once you secure your employment verification/volunteer position, the next step is to obtain a university ID.
3. All members of the lab must acquire access to the Animal Facility which is located in the Lurie Research Building. Gaining access takes 1-2 weeks and requires completion of several steps. For full information pertaining to this process, please visit the Animal Resource Facility and follow all the instructions. After you are done with all the requirements (and not before!), you should fill-out the ACUP amendement form to the best of your abilities. Upon IACUC approval, you will be given access to the animal facility.
5. You will be assigned your work space and computer for research use by Dr. Lesniak. You will be provided space in the refrigerators and freezers by Ms. Yu Han. Tissue culture hoods are shared and need to be reserved in advance via a sign-in-sheet posted outside the tissue culture room. Please make sure you contact Ms. Han as soon as you arrive to familiarize yourself with these procedure and to determine your additional needs (pipettes, reagents, etc). We make every afford to provide you with all the necessary equipment and reagents to successfully carry out your work.
6. Once you begin your work, please keep in mind that all order for reagents must be submitted to Ms. Yu Han. Orders over $250 will need to be approved by Dr. Lesniak. If you wish to order animals, please follow the instructions on the Animal Order Form. Keep in mind that you will have to provide a rationale for the proposed experiments and prepare a detailed budget that accounts for both the animal purchase as well as housing. Your request will have to be co-signed by Ms. Han (for financial accuracy) and Ms.Meijing Wu (for statistical power analysis). Once these individuals approve your request, Dr. Lesniak will evaluate it and upon final approval, you will be allowed to place an order for animals.
7. You will find the answers to many of your questions pertaining to the availability of reagents by following the links provided under Lab Resources of this site.
8. Finally, be sure to email Dr. Lesniak a photo of yourself (head-shot) as well as a brief biosketch so that your information can be posted on our site within your first week.
There will likely be many more questions and issues that will arise during the first few weeks to months of your work. We encourage you to ask the people in the lab for help and to contact Dr. Lesniak with any problems that may arise during your time with us. We all look forward to a productive and collaborative research experience.
